Downsizing Your Home? Tips For Using A Storage Unit

Posted on: 2 September 2016

If you are getting older in age and looking to downsize your home, you are going to run into a problem with where to put all your stuff. You have belongings that you have collected over many years, and there are things you don't need and things you simply want to keep. Thankfully, a storage unit can be the answer to your problem. These tips will help you manage what goes into it.

Holding Onto Mementos

You most likely have plenty of cherished mementos that you do not want to throw away. It could be artwork that your child made in kindergarten, or old photos that you one day hope to digitize and preserve.

When packing these mementos away, don't make the mistake of having them scattered across boxes. Many people pack up boxes based on the rooms they came from, but mementos should be organized in their own space so that you can easily get them out later. Stay away from storing mementos in cardboard just in case the box were to get wet. Instead, use a plastic container with a lid that will seal tightly.

Storing Seasonal Items

There are many things you have for your home, but you do not need them all year round. This includes seasonal items like Christmas lights and Halloween decorations. Organize these items by the seasonal occasion, and consolidate them into their own boxes.

Plan to always keep a box of seasonal items at your new home. It will make it easy to go to the storage unit and swap out previous season's decorations for the occasion that is coming up.

Purging Things You Do Not Need

Some things you need to decide that you just do not want them any more. This can include clothing that used to fit you way back when but is so out of style that nobody will wear it anymore. You may also have things like old magazines and boxes that items came in, things that you are holding onto but will most likely never use again.

Now is the time to go through your home and start purging. Separate items into things that can go in the trash and things that can be donated because they are still in good shape. Purging will also help the move go smoother, because there will be less packing and moving that needs to be done. You'll also need to put less items into storage, so you can go with a smaller and cheaper unit that meets your needs.

Thankfully, she can safely house them in a rented storage unit. Do you struggle to find space in your home to store presents or other belongings you just don't need on a regular basis? Perhaps you’ve regretted disposing of gifts or items in the past. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of placing your items used less often in a storage unit where you can treasure them forever. Enjoy!
